1 Peter 2:9King James Version (KJV)
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
Amidst all the danger of the world, the confusion, the disaster, the ugliness and the empathy towards others, I find great comfort on knowing who I am and where I belong. I find comfort in knowing that I am peculiar, chosen royal and that He hath called me out of darkness.
Out of all the things I want to teach my daughters, this one is in my top priorities. I want them to know who they really are, not what the world says women are, but their real identity.I want them to know that they are chosen, that they are royal and peculiar! I want them to value the beauty that comes from within more than the beauty created with jewelry, dresses, shoes, make up, and all the things we women love. I want them to see their reflection and realize that they are more that beautiful hair or a thin figure, that who they are is what makes them beautiful.
"Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" I truly believe that, and I think the reason for that is because some people see beyond the outside appearance, they see what really makes somebody beautiful. Their generosity, their virtue, their divine nature, their hard work, their intelligence, their faith, their diligence, their love for nature and others, their service, their courage, their willingness to stand up for what is right, their purity, their good works, their talents, their silliness, and even their mistakes and their desire to be better.
I recently saw certain soap campaign about beauty. I think they were trying to make sure women realized how beautiful they really are. However, their message came up a little wrong in my opinion, since it kind of emphasizes that beauty is only blue eyes, white skin, thin figure, blonde hair. I totally disagree with that misconception. I also don't believe that beauty is portrait by an specific super model in a magazine. There has been remarkable women through out history who I consider beautiful because of the things they did. Starting with Eve, in the Garden of Eden, who knows what she looked like? plus I don't think back in the day she had any make up to cover up her so called "imperfections" or to make her look "better" (dont' get me wrong, I love make up! I just don't like the emphasis put on the fact that is because of make up that you look beautiful) Anyway, back to Eve, her courage and determination to do what was right blessed mankind. My next favorite, Mary, who humbly accepted her calling as the mother of the Son of God! what a great example of faith and devotion, I can not imagine having such a kid in my home and still being worry about buying the latest pair of stilettos!!! (je je je!). Mother Teresa, what an example of true beauty, always serving others. I watched a documentary about her life and when she was a young woman she was physically quite attractive, but what we remembered is not her appearance, but her good works. Rosa Parks is another one of my favorites, what courage and integrity! I have a whole list of all this women that in my view had true beauty. Eleanor Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, Princess Diana, Marie Curie, Marian Anderson, Mary Cassat, Isadora Duncan, Anne Frank, Dorothea Lange, Annie O'akley, Toni Morrison, Beverly Sills, Gorgia Okeffe, all those amazing pioneer women, etc, etc. I am sure you have way more. Of course, my grandmother working the "milpa" (corn fields) at her 85 years; and my mother, who always told me that I am a daughter of God, but I forgot so many times.
All this women are the kind of model I want my daughters to look up to, not the fashion magazines ones with all the photo shop! I want that when they see their reflections in the mirror they see the amazing women they are and all that they can offer, that they are swam in a world of yellow ducklings.
